Join us on Monday, May 13, 7PM – 8PM for another in our Interesting People series. Upper Valley Resident Monika Schuller will share her experience at our southern border.

Inspired by Mandy Manning (the 2018 National Teacher of the year from Spokane Washington), Monika traveled to El Paso, Texas in February 2019 to take part in the first national “Teach in”. At the “Teach in”, she learned about what is happening to children on our southern border. Now, upon returning, she is compelled to tell her story and the truth about children seeking asylum in the United States.

Monika will talk about changes to immigration since 2017. She will speak of the children seeking refuge and the effects of trauma on the child’s brain. As part of this lecture, there will be readings, time for discussion, and even a short lesson on hate and racism. For 27 years, Monika has been teaching in public schools, and currently teaches Second-grade at Whitson Elementary School, in White Salmon. She is continually dedicated to children regardless of their challenges.
